It’s not just about Tatjana Zdanoka! – The Latvian MEP is not the only one to be on the Russian payroll: according to a parallel investigation conducted in several European countries, there is a network aimed at influencing dozens of MEPs that is allegedly fostered by oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk. Accusations that cast a shadow on future elections, as well as serious concerns about the Pandora’s box that could be uncovered

If you want peace, prepare for war – According to an IPSOS poll conducted for Euronews, common European defence is a priority for about half of EU citizens. A total of 83% consider it a desirable objective. Among the most ‘bellicose’ are Portugal, Finland, Sweden and Germany, while the least enthusiastic are Hungary, Italy and the Netherlands. The news is that this is a transversal consensus, uniting even Eurosceptics

Nobody wants Lady Ursula anymore! – The congress that nominated Von der Leyen as candidate for the Commission showed a clear split: many did not vote for her. The EPP will be the tiebreaker, even with all its divisions. Weber is champing at the bit to take the most coveted post, backed by a strong conservative support. But unexpected help for Lady Ursula could come from Giorgia Meloni, although the latter in turn risks splitting the ECR. The group’s vice-president, a Vox exponent, has already distanced himself: ‘We will not vote for her’.

How quickly things change… – EPP leader Manfred Weber has kind words for Giorgia Meloni: ‘Her government works constructively in Europe’. The conservative alliance continues on its inevitable path, while it seems a century ago that Weber himself was strongly criticised for his willingness to talk to the Italian leader: ‘European values cannot fall under the extreme right’, some MEPs wrote to him in a letter a year ago

The farce of the Weimar Triangle – There could not have been a better place for the meeting between Macron, Scholz and Tusk: a show designed to project unity where there is only division. Scholz rules out an escalation, preferring the idea of supplying the Ukrainians with arms and ammunition; Poland is a protagonist in the war, and it could not be otherwise. Finally, Petit-Napoleon considers Putin to be an ‘existential threat’, but only because Le Pen (the next president according to the polls) has joined the allied positions

Don’t write him off just yet -After the operation ‘Michel’s resignation’ did not manage to bring in Draghi (while in fact it was more of a boomerang move) Macron still holds on the Supermario card to get Giorgia Meloni in trouble. With Francesco Giavazzi already at home in Paris, it would be the way to have one of his own in the Italian quota. It cannot be ruled out, therefore, that Draghi’s could be put forward should Von der Leyen’s candidacy for the Commission fall apart

In the open society, secrets are open as well – Radosław Sikorski, whom we spoke about a few days ago as a potential new defence commissioner after the elections of next June, is already stepping into the role: ‘NATO military personnel are already present in Ukraine’. In fact, this is the revelation of a secret that everyone already knew, but the fact that there is now open talk of ground troops seems to indicate the beginning of a new phase in European Defence. We shall see where it leads…

Bubblereport #18 – The EPP congress elected Lady Ursula as its candidate for the encore presidency of the European Commission with only 400 votes in favor out of the 737 delegates entitled to vote. Of the 499 voters, 89 voted against her and 10 ballots were spoiled. The poor girl, who already has to run against herself, even received a slap in the face from Breton (former EPP and now Macron’s man in the Commission), who said: “Despite her qualities, Ursula von der Leyen is being outvoted by her own party. The real question now is: Is it possible to (re)entrust the running of Europe to the EPP for another 5 years, or 25 years in a row? The EPP itself does not seem to believe in its candidate”

Bubblereport #17 – At the Congress in Rome, the bigwigs of the European Socialist Party elected ‘mr. nobody’ Nicolas Schmit as Spitzenkandidat, before sending a message to Lady Ursula: ‘Our yes shouldn’t be taken for granted’ – she is accused of flirting a little too much with the European right (ECR above all). The poor girl, who is already running against herself (she has to dismantle her crazy Green Deal), is accused by those who have given the most votes to the European right-wingers throughout their ideological policies, such as the green transition at the expense of the poorest and in favor of China. Not to mention the chaos in their minds when it comes to foreign affairs: they are divided both on Gaza and on Ukraine

Bubblereport #16 – From the New Green Deal to the New War Deal: Lady Ursula is planning an EU rearmament strategy but without a political reform that could really lead to a common army (and therefore debt through serious treaty reforms). The EU is chasing events, not dominating them. Proof of this are the barbs between Scholz and Macron over Ukraine, which are cracking European effectiveness. This is not to say that Scholz leaked intelligence information that put France and Britain at risk

Greenlight for a big Green win – In Strasbourg the ‘nature restoration law’, which requires member states to restore at least 30 percent of specific habitats from ‘poor’ to ‘good’ condition (and 90 percent by 2050), was approved. The vote highlights the divisions within the EPP and Renew: indications of a potential future majority, without the Socialists, but with the ECR now increasingly moderate

Abandon all hope, European allies – Emmanuel Macron launches into one of the typical contradictions that have made him famous: ‘Russia cannot win in Ukraine’, he says, but at the same time Western governments have no intention of sending troops to fight the war. All that will be done is to send ammunition to allow Kiev to buy time, perhaps a few months. But still there is no sign of a winning strategy at the moment

Someone is keeping an eye on MEPs – The European Parliament on Wednesday urged members of its defence subcommittee to have their mobile phones checked for spyware after traces of hacking were found on two devices. Several reports, the latest published in December, have shown that precautions against this type of attack are woefully inadequate. A danger that is as real as ever, given that elections are due in June and the risk of interference is not just a risk
