Nobody wants Lady Ursula anymore! – The congress that nominated Von der Leyen as candidate for the Commission showed a clear split: many did not vote for her. The EPP will be the tiebreaker, even with all its divisions. Weber is champing at the bit to take the most coveted post, backed by a strong conservative support. But unexpected help for Lady Ursula could come from Giorgia Meloni, although the latter in turn risks splitting the ECR. The group’s vice-president, a Vox exponent, has already distanced himself: ‘We will not vote for her’.

How quickly things change… – EPP leader Manfred Weber has kind words for Giorgia Meloni: ‘Her government works constructively in Europe’. The conservative alliance continues on its inevitable path, while it seems a century ago that Weber himself was strongly criticised for his willingness to talk to the Italian leader: ‘European values cannot fall under the extreme right’, some MEPs wrote to him in a letter a year ago

With Francesco Giavazzi already at home in Paris, it would be the way to have one of his own in the Italian quota. It cannot be ruled out, therefore, that Draghi’s could be put forward should Von der Leyen’s candidacy for the Commission fall apart

The eternal Iberian instability – As many have pointed out in recent days, another socialist era is coming to an end in another EU country. Portugal is heading for a period of internal political instability that could be resolved by an agreement between the conservatives and the Chega! extreme right (an alliance that the former ruled out during the election campaign). Whatever happens, no one seems to have the numbers to govern: the decisive factor will be the European elections, which could confirm the right-wing trend and plunge the country into a post-socialist period

Bubblereport #18 – The EPP congress elected Lady Ursula as its candidate for the encore presidency of the European Commission with only 400 votes in favor out of the 737 delegates entitled to vote. Of the 499 voters, 89 voted against her and 10 ballots were spoiled. The poor girl, who already has to run against herself, even received a slap in the face from Breton (former EPP and now Macron’s man in the Commission), who said: “Despite her qualities, Ursula von der Leyen is being outvoted by her own party. The real question now is: Is it possible to (re)entrust the running of Europe to the EPP for another 5 years, or 25 years in a row? The EPP itself does not seem to believe in its candidate”

The poor girl, who is already running against herself (she has to dismantle her crazy Green Deal), is accused by those who have given the most votes to the European right-wingers throughout their ideological policies, such as the green transition at the expense of the poorest and in favor of China. Thank you, Poland – One of the names most often bandied about as the new defence commissioner (a role that would be created from scratch) is that of Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s current foreign minister. Former journalist, 20 years’ experience in politics and a friend of the United States (he was the one who wrote a tweet, then deleted, saying “Thank you, USA” after the Nord Stream 2 sabotage in 2022): a respectable CV for a position that is likely to be even less relevant than the High Representative for Foreign Affairs

Now it’s official – Ursula von der Leyen will run for the leadership of the Commission: a candidacy that will be enshrined at the EPP congress in Bucharest. In spite of the advance of the far-right throughout Europe, the EPP, instead of trying to curb the phenomenon by nominating an innovative figure, opts for the usual safe. And the poor girl will be a candidate against herself, since she will have to dismantle all the waffle provided by her old warhorse: the Green Deal. She will then push the idea of having a new commissioner in charge of defense. But until the treaties are reformed, we risk having another unemployed person as head of a foreign policy that does not really exist

There’s space on the right, apparently… – Tino Chrupalla, co-leader of Alternative für Deutschland, does not hold it against Giorgia Meloni, claiming that she has compromised too much with the system she wanted to change.
