The time has come to change the EU's strategy on Syria. This is the meaning of the joint letter sent to the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy by eight member countries including Italy. In addition to Antonio Tajani to sign the were the foreign ministers of Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Greece, the Czech Republic, Cyprus and Austria.
“EU policy toward Syria has not evolved with the result that the enormous humanitarian effort has not been translated into a corresponding political role. We believe that the time has come to review and assess the results of the Strategy achieved so far; the effectiveness of our actions and instruments; and the options for adjusting our approach, based on the results achieved. Our goal is a more active, results-oriented and operational Syria policy,” reads the letter, which calls for returning to the subject at the next Foreign Affairs Councils. “This would enable us to increase our political influence, the effectiveness of humanitarian assistance and the effectiveness of early interventions, contributing to the achievement of conditions for the safe, voluntary and dignified return of Syrian refugees, in accordance with UNHCR standards,” the eight foreign ministers stress.
