'There is one attempt after another to blackmail Hungary and to pressurise it even more. I can only say to the Hungarian government and Prime Minister Orban that we strongly support their efforts to reject these brutal blackmail attempts that are outside the law. We do not accept this approach'. So said former Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, at a press conference in Brussels. 'This is not the way the EU should operate,' he then pointed out, referring to the EU plan revealed by the Financial Times to sabotage the Hungarian economy. The former prime minister also accused Brussels of using double standards when assessing the rule of law. 'There is a huge ambiguity and a different approach to the rule of law, depending on who is in power,' Morawiecki said, lamenting how in Poland 'many articles of the Constitution have been brutally violated' by the government.

'It is the prerogative of the Hungarian government, particularly Viktor Orban' to apply for membership, and 'it is our prerogative to accept a new member,' he explained at a press conference in Brussels. 'I am not sure,' he added, 'that there will be any changes before the elections, personally I am open to Fidesz joining our group.'
