Since November 5, when Donald Trump won the American presidential election, Elon Musk’s stature, as one of the world’s richest people, has been increasing. The billionaire appears to be closely aligned with the president-elect. He participates in discussions with key political figures and even spent Thanksgiving with him. Because of this, some people refer to him as the vice president and wonder if he is replacing JD Vance.

Musk has a history of making controversial statements, which have been met with waves of criticism. He has commented on NATO (questioning “why NATO continued to exist”) and Ukraine (mocking the words of President Zelensky). Most recently, he called the European Commission (EC) an “undemocratic” institution.

Earlier, in August, Musk accused the EU of meddling in U.S. internal affairs, when then-Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton sent him an open letter. Breton warned against spreading harmful content on X and imposing a political narrative in connection with a planned live broadcast of an interview with Donald Trump on the platform.

American media estimate that the billionaire spent at least $270 million on Donald Trump’s campaign. Critics argue that this sum should include the amount he paid for Twitter (now X), where he and other Trump supporters disseminated a large volume of content favoring Republicans and aggressively criticized the Democratic candidate.

Musk’s recent comments about the EC were, unsurprisingly, not well-received in Brussels. European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho stated this week that the billionaire’s remarks about the “undemocratic” EC are an attempt to interfere in the internal politics of the European Union.

Pinho, however, did not wish to comment on statements made by U.S. Vice President-elect JD Vance. In September, during the election campaign, on a television program, Vance threatened that the U.S. might withdraw its support for NATO if the European Commission does not halt the enforcement of European digital regulations on platforms. Especially on X. The EC spokeswoman said that this is clear interference in our internal politics, and she was not going to address it

Atlantic Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg carefully avoids naming him, as if he was the devil himself. But the Norwegian does not hide what he is responding to. He has no choice. Too incendiary were the words of the former, perhaps future, US president, who thwarted the promise of solidarity that is the very pillar of NATO: in the event of aggression, his America would refuse to come to the aid of a sullen Europe that refuses to invest in its own defense. Stoltenberg’s response on behalf of the allies has two parts. In the first, he agrees with Trump on the facts, albeit with a slight interpretive twist in his remarks: “The criticism we hear is not about NATO, but about its members not spending enough on the Alliance. And this is a well-founded point that has already been discussed with several American administrations.” The answer is the news of the day, which Stoltenberg hastened to announce, although it wasn’t scheduled to be announced at a summit whose central theme remains Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine: in 2024, 18 of the 31 NATO countries will spend at least 2 percent of their GDP on defense, the fateful threshold they had pledged to reach since 2014 at the Cardiff summit. it’s a record: in nine years, the European states and Canada together have increased their military budgets by as much as 600 billion. Among the new virtuous ones, Italy is still absent, but for the first time Germany, Europe’s leading economy, has joined. And their number may even increase, thanks to ongoing budget adjustments in some countries. The second part is a little history lesson on the reasons for the success of an alliance that has provided deterrence and peace for 75 years. A strong NATO makes the United States stronger, which “has never won a war on its own, from Korea to Afghanistan,” Stoltenberg recalled. Perhaps the role of the Allies has been exaggerated. The U.S. still accounts for more than two-thirds of NATO’s total spending, and at the end of the day it is still 80,000 U.S. troops and the U.S. nuclear umbrella that guarantee Europeans’ security. But there is no question that U.S. strategic hegemony has had Atlantic solidarity as a crucial component of its durability and success. The real problem is that unlike six years ago, when he was in the White House and waving the same threats, Trump’s statements fall in a radically different context, where war is no longer a schoolyard hypothetical. Putin has unleashed it against Ukraine, and many countries, from the Nordic countries to Poland to Germany itself, believe that within a few years he could do so against a NATO country as well. The hypothesis that the Kremlin will unleash its war dogs in a Shakespearean crescendo has now entered the conversation of diplomats and experts. The zeitgeist is mobilized. So much so that even Germany is breaking the nuclear taboo and openly discussing European nuclear deterrence, starting with the French “force de frappe.” To suggest, as Trump does, that NATO cannot count on America in the face of a possible Russian attack, that America is no longer willing to risk a nuclear holocaust to defend Tallinn, makes the prospect less tawdry. That is why his double message should be read as the beginning of a hugging strategy that, with increased military spending by European allies, would take away any argument from Trump in the event of his return to the White House. Paradoxically, but fatally, it is now the war on our borders that will unite and weld Europe from West to East into a new political and democratic entity, a new home for being together in the name of a common higher interest. The very idea of America’s withdrawal from NATO, from the European front, will necessarily force us to rethink our foreign policy and our common defense; today France has the atomic bomb and a permanent seat at the UN. In the near future, it will have to be Europe that has this role.

When the stability of your security is heavily reliant on a specific election outcome, it’s a clear sign of distress. Our review of European news outlets revealed a pattern of reporting heavily influenced by wishful thinking. For instance, a German reporter tried to downplay the significance of Iowa, while the BBC’s website suggested that Trump’s overwhelming victory actually worked in favor of Biden’s campaign. It’s evident that when the history of the West’s rise and decline is penned, the role of hopeful but unrealistic expectations will be significant.

In the context of the European Union, where many politicians see Atlanticism as a sustainable approach, this is particularly true. Effective partnerships require effort from both sides. However, the US political landscape is changing, with a new wave of both right-wing and left-wing politicians who are not committed to transatlantic initiatives.

The EU prematurely considered the problems resolved following the 2020 US elections. The invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin made them feel fortunate to have Joe Biden as president. However, suggesting that the EU is unprepared for Trump’s potential return would be an understatement.

Ideally, the starting point would have been back in 2016 when Trump first took office. Even though a defense union wouldn’t be fully operational by now, progress would have been made. The EU’s success during Jacques Delors’ time was largely due to strategic, long-term planning. Just like the monetary union wasn’t spontaneously created but was methodically planned, ratified in a treaty, and executed in stages, defense should be similarly approached. Starting with integrating defense procurement into the single market would be logical, leveraging the EU’s expertise in managing a unified market to foster economic efficiency and spur high-tech defense research, something beyond the capacity of Europe’s divided national markets. However, discussions shouldn’t initially focus on a unified European army. Real power is built on strong, foundational structures.

This power won’t emerge from Franco-German leadership. Returning to the influential Franco-German partnerships of the past, like those of Adenauer and De Gaulle or Kohl and Mitterrand, seems implausible. The future of German leadership appears limited to a few names like Scholz, Friedrich Merz, maybe Markus Söder, and some CDU state premiers, while figures like Marine Le Pen and various young populists are prominent in France. Currently, the Franco-German relationship is more symbolic than substantial, characterized by joint cabinet meetings and repetitive speeches rather than substantive cooperation. Deep divisions, especially in economic policies like energy and finance, overshadow the relationship. A sovereign debt crisis seems more probable than a Franco-German resurgence.

Should Trump win again, we anticipate a retreat into the illusion that the issues will simply dissolve. This is essentially a return to the comfort of baseless optimism. Denying Trump’s impact is one way this optimism manifests, paralleled by the exaggerated fear that democracy will collapse with his election, reminiscent of the situation in Germany in 1933.

Confronting a figure like Trump is extremely challenging due to his unconventional political tactics. The Democrats’ aggressive legal pursuits against him were a misstep. Similarly, the catastrophic predictions about the demise of democracy are likely to be counterproductive. Europeans, on their part, are in complete denial. Both groups share a common trait: like the Bourbons, they neither learn from the past nor remember it.

To the risks we already face from the 59 or so wars in the world right now, one may be added that exacerbates them all: America’s retreat. When Donald Trump calls Biden crazy for bombing the Houthis, he touches a sensitive nerve in American public opinion, both on the right and the left. The Founding Fathers of the American Republic had turned their backs on Europe by vowing not to get involved in its religious wars. Today, many may harbor the same sentiment toward the secular feuds between Shiites and Sunnis. The isolationist right and pacifist left wanted to stay out of World War I and World War II, abandoning Europe to the Reich or the Hitler-Stalin duo. Today, some right-wing people wonder why helping Ukraine defend its borders if streams of drugs and waves of illegal immigrants pass through the U.S.-Mexico border. Many left-wing people hate an expression like “world gendarme” and wish for an illusory peace created only by the UN. An America that folds in on itself would leave gaps that no one else can fill. Or has the will to fill, in the case of the Europeans. In this sense, what is happening in the Red Sea is likely to be a small taste of the world to come. Instead, small nations, dependent on foreign trade as European states are, are among the most unprepared to survive this scenario.
